Barriers To Effective Listening

Things which affects our listening of a certain sound can be termed as barriers to effective listening. There are many problems that comes across while listening over the phone, and it effects our listening. Below are some barriers which comes across us. They are described as follows :
Barriers :
  • Line noise & faulty equipments
  • Tuned out of the conversation because it does not interests you
  • Are " just the facts Ma'am/Sir's/Madams " listener
  • Not energetic or enthusiastic
  • Lack of passion
  • Body posture
  • External distractions and interruptions
  • Pre - conceived notions and assumptions
  • Munching
  • Are opinionated about the speech delivery
  • Day dreaming
  • Indifferent attitude
  • Iming
  • Chatting
  • Checking mails
  • Unnecessary using Web

How can we overcome these barriers?

We can overcome these barriers by the following ways ;

  1. Having all the necessary resources available
  2. Having a clear mind
  3. Do not have any biased thoughts in your mind
  4. Do not try to assume yourself
  5. Avoid interruptions
  6. Learn to fight distractions
  7. Do not be pre - occupied
  8. Concentrate on your tone
  9. Pay Attention on it as well as the problem of hearing with the clients
  10. Listen between the lines
  11. Anticipate and understand the emotions behind words
  12. Pick up the hidden concerns
  13. Having no doubts in your mind
